Diversified miner Rio Tinto has signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement with TerraGen to supply 78.5 MW of wind energy to its Kennecott copper operation in Utah.

The electricity will come from TerraGen’s 238.5 MW Monte Cristo I Windpower project in Texas, which has recently entered commercial operation.

Rio Tinto Kennecott MD Nate Foster said on Thursday the deal expanded the miner’s renewable--energy portfolio in the US and supported new greenfield renewables capacity on the grid.

“It’s the latest in a series of renewable-energy projects for Kennecott, following the installation of a 5 MW solar plant in 2023 and a second 25 MW solar plant that is nearing completion,” he said. “We continue to look for ways to power our operations while lowering emissions to help achieve Rio Tinto’s long-term decarbonisation goals.”

Rio Tinto aims to cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. The company currently sources about 78% of its electricity globally from renewables and plans to lift this to about 90% by 2030.
